Interactive Story – Research-Creative Project

This project is a research and creative project I completed during Digital Storytelling. This project aimed to conduct research on a particular field of digital storytelling and then create our own example of it. I chose to focus on interactive narratives, using academic and professional resources, and utilized Twine to design and program my interactive narrative. The first part of this project is an essay I wrote showing my research and how it connected to the creative example I made. While the actually narrative fiction game I created cannot be linked in this post, screenshots are provide to demonstrate the process of creating and working with software programs new to me, showing my ability to quickly learn and adapt to new processes. This research project shows how I can conduct thorough research and analysis and comprehensively use findings to develop substantive projects.

Webcomic Project

For this digital storytelling project, we were tasked with writing Webcomic scripts and formatting our projects as if submitting them to an actual Webcomic publisher like Webtoons or Tapas. I scripted a scene about a woman in a cybernetic city who regains her memories and seeks revenge on those who hurt her family. I chose to format my script based on how Webtoon creators format their scripts, and overall, Webtoon inspired me. The first part of this document is my submission pitch and cover letter if I were to submit this to Webtoon, and the next part of this document is the actual script I created. This project helped me with story formatting and learning which medium best fits different stories. It shows my versatility as a writer and my versatility in creative ideas.

Digital Storytelling Social Media Fairytale Project

For this digital storytelling project, I retold and adapted the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland for a social media platform. I complete this project in my digital storytelling class and I chose to adapt Alice in Wonderland for Instagram. I used Microsoft Word for this project and it is a ready to upload document, which means that each post is outlined and includes a caption. Therefore, one may easily upload it to Instagram at any time. For this project, I wished to use images to create the immersive and straightforward experience that readers usually get when viewing different narratives on Instagram. I also included hashtags so that an audience and an author, which in this case would be myself, could interact with each other and discuss things using the comment feature available on the platform.

Emma Short Story Developmental Editing Project

The document above is a developmental editing project I completed in Professional Editing. During this course, I learned copy and developmental editing skills. Both of these are exemplified in the document above. I was tasked with developmentally editing one of my projects for this assignment. Therefore, I acted as if I was an outside party reading “Emma” and providing feedback on it like a professional developmental editor. This assignment was completed using the track changes and commenting features in Microsoft Word, and my process for the developmental editing was to consider what audiences may expect or react to as they read the short story.

Emma Short Story

“Emma” is another short story I completed during Fiction Writing. It is eleven pages long and named after its main character, Emma, a domestic service robot wishing for freedom. I was inspired by the TV show Westworld when I wrote this short story. This story is also a Microsoft Word document formatted to be submission ready. As a course requirement, I submitted Emma to a fiction magazine, and though it was rejected, I took the feedback to make revisions. Before submitting “Emma” to a fiction magazine, it underwent several revisions as my professor and peers reviewed it and provided feedback.

Journey 1 Securing Aurora Short Story

This creative writing project is a twenty-one-page short story titled “Journey 1: Securing Aurora,” hinting that there are other journeys for the characters in the story. This story follows a thief whose punishment for his crimes is to become a Knight and unite the Kingdom of Sonne, which is witnessing divisions. In “Journey 1,” Ezekiel, the main character, and his comrades encounter the residents of Aurora, who are having issues with the displaced peoples in the forest behind them. This document utilizes Microsoft Word, and the draft is formatted as if it was ready to submit to a publishing company. I completed this draft during my Fiction Writing class, where we submitted drafts, peer-reviewed, and made revisions to our stories based on feedback.

“Supervillain” (Working Title) Feature Film Script

I drafted a fifty-page feature film script for this creative writing project, which I completed during my Advanced Screenwriting class. The prerequisite for this class was Introduction to Film and TV Writing, where I first began to practice screenwriting and learn specific techniques. I expanded my knowledge for this project and drafted a feature film script. Though this script is only halfway complete, as it only goes up until the film’s midpoint, it shares the story of a young woman who follows in her father’s footsteps in becoming a supervillain to protect their community. I used scriptwriting techniques I learned throughout both screenwriting classes, which included making a logline, character biographies, and tentpoles to outline my draft. I then used Celtx script writing software to create my draft.

“Ocean Shore” Short Film Script

I completed this ten-page short film script while in Introduction to Film and TV writing. This script is titled “Ocean Shore” as it shares the story of two brothers reconnecting after the death of their father. I learned how professional screenwriters create script drafts during Introduction to Film and TV writing. I used features and details from other films and narratives to create a script that could be submitted to professional organizations and competitions. These features and techniques include falling specific plot points and outline conventions like creating loglines and tentpoles with detailed descriptions of character arcs and storylines. I also learned how to use the scriptwriting software Celtx to create my draft and follow scriptwriting conventions.
